STGi is currently recruiting for a full-time Neurosurgery Physician Assistant to support the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.
Clinical Duties/Responsibilities:

Perform a range of Neuro- surgery services on site, using Government furnished facilities, equipment and supplies. Workload includes scheduled and unscheduled requirements for services. The health care worker is responsible for the delivery of Neuro- surgery services within the facility and for the quality and timeliness of records, reports and documentation of services provided. Clinical productivity is expected to be comparable to that of other Physician Assistants who are authorized the same scope of practice and assigned to the same type of a facility.

Perform complete evaluations on patients of all ages (pediatric through geriatric). Order and interpret appropriate lab, X-ray, and special studies.

Establish a working diagnosis based upon acquired data and develop a treatment plan for neurosurgical conditions in accordance with current neurosurgery practice and in conjunction with the neurosurgeon.

Implement therapeutic intervention and provide appropriate follow-up care. Exercise judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising neurosurgeon or other healthcare professionals.

Perform and/or assist with procedures including the placement of ventriculostomies, ICP monitors, lumbar drains, the performance of lumbar punctures and shunt taps, closures of spine, cranial, and peripheral wounds including two layer scalp closures, placement of tongs and halos, including those procedures requiring local anesthetics. Procedures will not be performed without prior mentoring by Neurosurgery attending physicians and the demonstration of competence.
Inpatient Responsibilities:

Perform complete pre-operative H & Ps on all surgical patients, identifying and alerting the surgeon to any disqualifying conditions that present.

Conduct hospital rounds on a daily basis, when requested of all ward and ICU patients. Evaluate care and write orders including but not limited to appropriate labs, special studies, IV s, diet, and therapeutic interventions required.

In coordination with the surgeon, formulate and implement discharge planning and clinical follow-up, and dictate discharge summaries.

Evaluate and provide appropriate intervention (in coordination with supervising surgeon) for ER patients consulted for neurosurgical conditions.
Outpatient Responsibilties:

See new, follow-up and postoperative patients and provide intervention that is problem oriented for their Neurosurgical conditions. Present patients, when appropriate, to the supervising surgeon and assist in care, treatment, and follow up as needed.

Perform comprehensive preoperative histories and physicals for neurosurgical and neuro interventional patients and alerting the surgeon to disqualifying conditions.

Order and interpret lab, x-ray, special studies, clinical procedures, and provide appropriate care and follow-up. Provide phone consultation for patient questions, complaints and prescription refills.

Evaluate, screen and counsel patients on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources. Design, conduct, and/or participate in research studies, manage databases, perform quality assurance.
Required Skills:
-
Possess current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Graduation from a physician assistant training program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)

Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

A minimum of 1 year of full-time experience within the last 3 years.
