SUMMARY:
Assessment of student intellectual and social-emotional development; counseling students; confer with others to facilitate students success in learning and in developing positive relationships with others.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assessment of Students
To evaluate personality as it affects achievement and behavior in school.
To evaluate intellectual ability in order to determine the level of academic potential.
To identify and diagnose students who are in need of special services.
To evaluate and investigate each psychological service referral and plan appropriate action which will best help the student and teacher.
To assess children who enter special services class (i.e., LD, MR) in the areas of intellectual ability, social/emotional adjustment, etc.
To interpret test results and observations to determine if an individual student has a significant learning style and to work with staff in implementing specific activities and modifications to increase his/her educational effectiveness.
To follow-up students referred in order to determine the effectiveness of their educational programs. To perform necessary testing, in the areas of intelligence and emotional adjustment, as part of the mandated re-evaluation process.
To interpret or coordinate psychological evaluations conducted by other agencies or individuals on students.
To serve on the pre-referral team in order to assess the need for evaluation or for classroom modifications, home communication, counseling, etc.
To screen or assess developmental readiness and make recommendations.
Analysis, Interpretation and Reporting of Assessment Data
To provide communications to principals and relevant staff with regard to results of individual psychological evaluations.
To interpret the results of individual psychologicals to teachers or counselors so that appropriate individualized programming and instruction can be established.
To interpret to the student, when appropriate, the results of his/her individual psychological in order to increase personal awareness.
To interpret to the students parents or guardians the results of testing and its educational, social and emotional implications.
To recommend to PPT meetings special services to meet an individual students academic or emotional needs (also including physical needs).
Analysis, Interpretation and Reporting of Assessment Data (continued)
To assimilate all available information on a students current functioning and present it in a comprehensive manner.
To present at building and central PPT meetings individual test results, observations and recommendations to help determine appropriate placements.
To exchange information with other Pupil Services personnel so that further evaluations in reading, speech, language, hearing, and social work may be recommended.
Counseling Services
To counsel with students, individually or through group work, regarding personal problems or needs.
To discuss in classes or small group work areas relating to growth, positive self-image and other psychological issues.
Prescribing Programs
To work with staff in developing and implementing programs for early identification of children with learning problems or social/emotional problems.

Community Service
To serve as a liaison and consultant to professionals and parents in the school, home and community.
To act as a referral source between school and home and outside agencies in obtaining services to improve the childs relationship to school.
To discuss school psychological services with interested community organizations.
To serve as a liaison between the school staff and medical and mental health services in the community.
Consulting Services
To aid teachers and administrators in understanding the behavioral characteristics of pupils with learning disorders.
To aid teachers in identifying students with behavioral, intellectual, emotional, and perceptual-motor problems which affect classroom learning.
To consult with the teacher in the development of a behavior modification system based on the principles of learning and on applied social reinforcement system.
To consult with parents in the development of understanding of the childs learning problem, the recommendations made, and their own involvement as parents.
When appropriate, to consult with individual students regarding the nature of their learning and/or behavior problem.
Professional Growth
To interpret to faculty the proper use of psychological services, proper interpretation of test results, and psychological principles.
To keep current with literature and relevant journals in areas of specialization.
To attend workshops relating to areas of specialization.
Professional Growth
To provide in-service education to faculty when necessary to help them meet the needs in the classroom.
Performs other duties as appropriate and required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Masters degree in school psychology or equivalent.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid teaching certificate with one or more special education endorsements.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, staff and parents. Ability to utilize proper telephone etiquette.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to understand the integrity and confidentiality of certain matters pertaining to the work of the system.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instruction program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
